Fungus and other Cool Things

I like fungus.

Not the nasty black stuff – I’m talking about the ultra cool fungus you find in fields and wooded areas. I bought a book on identifying fungus. Now stop laughing. I know the image of this intrepid cat, slogging through the forest, peering at mushrooms and fungus will strike many as funny. But it’s great fun. I’ve been taking my camera with me in hopes of finding good examples and have had some success. Mind you I stink at identifying the various fungus and mushrooms. Doesn’t stop me from trying.

I can’t believe how many types of fungus there are.

And Toronto is a treasure trove of fungus finds. (Go ahead all those who love to make fun of Toronto – I put this one in just so you could have a good giggle. Enjoy!)

I went down into the ravine behind my place a few weeks back and took some photos. We took Bonnie, our scottie dog along. She loves snuffling about down there. We keep her on a leash so she doesn’t chase any chipmunks or other critters who live down there. She’s quite patient while I’m playing around with the settings on the camera. I’m impressed. Trust me, I fiddle fart about a lot with the camera. The local wildlife gets a bit impatient while I set up my shots. I can hear the chipmunks chattering away impatiently at me, trying to shoo me away.

I think the ones to the left are called Dryads Saddle. I love the name. With enough patience I can get nice close ups of the gills on the fungus. And with time I’ll actually be able to identify some of the shrooms correctly.

Each mushroom has a unique texture, some look feathered up close. Others have the most amazing colouring. I didn’t realize they were so spectacular. We have received a lot of rain here in the last 24 hours and its humid so hopefully I’ll see even more fungus this weekend.

I’m in the hunt for mushrooms now. One in particular, I’ll have to go down to the waterfront and skulk around. Its called the Water Measurer. It’s found around the Great Lakes and in sandy areas. There are some great spots to hunt around town. It resembles something out of a B monster movie. I’m keen to see any “bird’s nest” mushrooms. They are tiny so it
will take a lot of patience on my part. I’ll let you know when I manage to see them.

In the meantime, enjoy a few photos of the ravine.
