Chile’s whitewash of last night’s nonsense is in progress.

The dust hasn’t settled over last night’s game. I attended the game and have a few things to say.
Sorry folks but I’m furious at the revisionist view of the game and its aftermath.
The first argument is Medel shouldn’t have been red carded for the kick at the Argentinian. Don’t agree at all. Just because he didn’t connect is irrelevant. Perhaps a yellow would have sufficed, but in my opinion this incident shows the temper control issue.
Another argument is Dagoberto Currimilla didn’t grab the ref, he only touched him. Whether he touched or grabbed is irrelevant – you don’t place a hand on the officials. Again, I was watching and he grabbed the ref’s arm. He would have been red carded for this incident in any other game.
According to the hysterical faction, the Chileans were only running onto the field last night to “discuss” the the Chilean loss. If I were a ref, I would have wet myself at the sight of the players charging in their direction. There were tussles, and pushing and shouting. Chile was not in a discussing mood. The police arrived for a reason – to stop any carnage. They did not use excessive force on the field – as some jackasses have claimed. I watched as the police separated the players and protected the officials. That claim is bullshit.
If the fans that sat near me are any indication, I would have been concerned too. There were tussles in the stand, and obscenities thrown about by the same fans. I was disgusted with many of them. They were rude and unreasonable. Many have said nothing happened in the stands???? In our section, we looked like a bunch of Meer cats popping up and down in our seats to see what was happening. Tempers were flaring. They didn’t happen according to many articles. So the only reason for this disparity … I must have been in a different time-line and saw a different game.
Dives? BOTH teams are guilty of diving. Neither is innocent of this charge. Evidently no one saw the shameful display Chile put on when they played Canada on July 1. They deserved an Oscar for best performance. Chile is well known for their antics. Canada was on the bad end of some very bad officiating and many questionable calls. Still, Chile was the better team on that day and won. Yes some of last nights calls that should not have occurred. BUT, everyone is ignoring the fact that Argentina was the better team.
Now we come to the section that has me PISSED OFF! The stupidity that went on after the game. Chile is setting the scene with its new allegations about police brutality, and racism because FIFA is investigating their behaviour. Chile and its delegates are afraid of a FIFA ban and are doing a pre-emptive strike. Chile was out of control. Let me first line out the allegations:
- The players were only trying to get off the bus to see their fans – not because they were throwing a temper tantrum.
- Police wouldn’t allow cameras to record – funny, The Globe and Mail has a nifty little clip of what went on. One of the witnesses was a CBC cameraman.
- Tear gas was used. Chile wasn’t saying that this morning. Funny that eh?
- Police beat the players, up to 10 cops beating one player. Again, funny this wasn’t mentioned this morning.
- This morning, even fans were stating the players were tearing up their bus. Tonight they are singing a different tune.
- Racism was the root of the police behaviour – nope… not a chance on that one. This came out after the Chileans realised they may have blown their Sunday game. With this allegation all Officials at the game will be terrified of calling them on their dives.
- Canada is responsible for the officiating. Take this one up with FIFA please. We have NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. We are the hosts, not FIFA. We cannot control what FIFA does. And if we tried to then we would be guilty of gross interference and would deserve to be booted out of the league.
Police were there to ensure things didn’t escalate even further. Situations like this go wild in a flash. How many times have rowdy fans and hot tempered players create a flash-point that careens out of control in an instant. If they had not intervened, I hate to speculate what would have happened.
Chile has some valid grievances about some of the calls. All soccer clubs do. Its part of the problem with human refs. Chile has both suffered and benefited from this in the past. Deal with it. There is a way of doing this, not throwing a king sized temper tantrum. Take it up with FIFA. I stand by my assertion that this entire display is an attempt to set the stage for Sunday’s game.
The fans – if that is what they wish to be known as – should be ashamed. Get a dictionary, a thesaurus and a vocabulary. Sheesh, really is shouting out Homo every couple of minutes is boring. Behaviour bordering on hooliganism is a good description.
Oh… the mail I’m about to get on this rant is going to be interesting.
