Your going to get tired of Blue jays soon. This is my fourth attempt at doing a full colour ink drawing. Let me tell you, it’s not as easy as it sounds. Not sure why, but trying to feather in blue is incredibly difficult – the shadows and highlights just don’t cooperate. It’s not hard doing them in browns or black. I’m not sure why the blue is so hard.

Anyway, here’s my fourth attempt at drawing a Blue jay in full colour:

From Catpaw’s Art work – birds

The first two were okay, but very rough around the shoulders and breast. Eyes are a doddle, but trying to feather in blue? Who knew it would take so much effort. For the third attempt, I tried to do a light wash of blue first and then put in the feathers, but it really made the bird look like I’d used pencil crayons.

This time I feathered the blue on, then ran over sections with white ink to get a bit of highlighting. The chest was much easier as well. I diluted the ink down with distilled water, put a hint of black into it and Bob’s your uncle! Delicate little chest feathers. His crest looks pretty good, but it’s going to take a lot of practice to get the rest looking as good. I ran into only one major problem this time – Cat kept trying to drink the watered down ink. He seems to think little trays of ink are some form of room service.

I promise, last Blue Jay for awhile! I’ll move onto other little feathery friends soon.

I tackled a blue jay today. Well, not really, I tackled the task of sketching one in pen and ink. As with my previous ones, I’ve used an earlier drawing and fleshed it out with nib pen and ink.

I used Winsor & Newton’s Nut Brown ink this time. Very similar to the Peat Brown, but without that hint of red in it. I’m not as happy with this drawing as I was with my earlier ones. I think I was getting a bit impatient and didn’t pay close enough attention to the feathering. I was also a bit heavy handed around the beak, mostly because I blotted a bit and was trying to cover the boo boo.

I think this is a prime candidate for a full colour ink treatment.

Here’s the original pencil drawing it was based on:

The feathering is much more subtle. I need more practice with my pens before I’m comfortable with complex feathering.

I’m working on some new pencil drawings. I’ll post them when I’m happy with them. In the meantime, enjoy.

I’ve been playing with different nibs with my pen and ink birds. I’ve been switching between large nibs and ultra fine ones to get a nice shadowing and feathering effect. Today, I redid a little pencil sketch of a Beswick Wren I drew about 2 years ago. I used a couple of nibs, primarily a Hunt 22 and 66 for all the layered light feathers, and for the heavier shaded areas I used an interesting calligraphy nib. Unfortunately the writing is in Japanese so I haven’t a clue what the type is.

I used the same ink – Winsor & Newton Peat Brown ink. Love the colour. I did the same thing as last, scanned a light copy of a drawing I’d done previously and printed it on good paper.

Here’s the wren:

The ink blotted a bit around the wing where some of the ink blotted. I need to talk to someone who uses pen and nibs to draw with to get a few recommendations on nibs. I got a little enthusiastic with the markings on his head because I was enjoying using the ink so much. The stripes should be a lot lighter in spots, but I couldn’t seem to stop myself. The tail feathers came out beautifully.

Anyway, if things go right this week, I’ll start drawing some new pictures. And yes, all little song birds.

At long last, I’ve begun to sketch again. I’ve been trying to draw buildings, but they really aren’t ready for prime time yet. I seem to have a problem with getting things aligned properly – things tend to list to the right on most of my drawings. Not sure why but it’s quite annoying.

I’ve wanted to do pen and ink drawings for .. well .. yonks. It’s one of those things that I was a bit to afraid to try because I was worried I’d be wasting my time and money. I’ve gone to the art store over and over and looked rather longingly at the various nibs and inks. In the end I’ve always put them back on the shelf. About 2 weeks ago I decided to take the plunge. I purchased a bottle of black ink and a couple of nibs and tried them out. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, no major catastrophes, but the sketches were very heavy. No delicacy or shading so I felt a bit discouraged. I read up on different types of inks and techniques and decided I needed one designed for drawing. A return to the art store was called for.

I love trips to the art store. All those pencils, inks and papers … I sometimes worry the staff think I’m some sort of a kook because I love running my fingers over different types of paper and mutter “ohhhhh” – it’s like porn for an artist. Anyway, I picked up 2 bottles of Winsor & Newton semi-transparent inks – Nut Brown and Peat Brown. I didn’t want plain black again. When I looked at my first attempts, the black looked so harsh. The browns have warmer, earthier tones that suit the little song birds I like to draw. The semi-transparent promised to be lighter and flow better which would make shading less onerous. I also picked up a few more nibs; something makes me think I’m going to be a bit brutal on them, so I will never have too many. I also grabbed more pencils, many, many pencils. Some women can never have enough shoes, I can never have enough pencils.

This evening, I sat at my desk scribbling on paper for about an hour, testing the nibs and how the ink flows. The ink was a revelation! It’s light, easy to use and lets you shade beautifully – from subtle outlines and shadows to darker edges. I kind of chewed on my lip for a bit debating about using the ink on one of my pencil sketches but was torn. What if I buggered up the picture? I really like pencil on paper and didn’t want to lose any of them. So I cheated a bit. I took one of the sketches I had scanned earlier, opened it in Photoshop and set the opacity to @ 25%. I grabbed a sheet of paper designed for pen and ink drawings, trimmed it to fit my printer and hit print. Worked like a charm! On the paper was a faint outline of the original pencil sketch which was a perfect guide. I propped the original up in front of my and put nib to paper and here you have my first complete pen and ink sketch, a lovely little chestnut warbler done in Peat Brown ink:

From Catpaw's Art work – birds

Printing a faint image onto specialty paper worked much better than I thought it would. Great way to practice and get the feel of pen and ink.
Here’s the original pencil sketch from ’09:

From Catpaw's Art work – birds

I want to run down to the store and pick up all the other colours, but I’ll have to contain myself. Practice with techniques and then reward myself later. But first, I need to solve the mystery of the missing black ink bottle. I forgot to put it away earlier in the week, something I don’t normally do because Cat loves to rustle around on my desk and take naps on it. Anything that doesn’t meet with his approval is summarily ejected from the desk. Damned if I haven’t seen the darned thing in 3 days now.

I’m having one of those moments where it’s simply too difficult to do anything but enjoy the moment. Mother Nature is playing a nasty trick on us – making us think spring is here already. It’s a bright, warm day out… ohhhh… we are going to pay! I just know in my little heart that winter will have at least one last gasp left in it. When it hits, it will feel worst because of the lovely weather we’ve had the past few days. I found myself sitting on a bench sunning my face, not thinking about anything except how lovely it felt.

I was positively giddy with excitement when I heard all the birds singing their feathery hearts out earlier today. Speaking of birds:

I looked and didn’t see this little fellow posted, if he has been, well.. think of it as a spring repeat. I was testing out different types of pencils with him. Parts worked very well, other parts were a bit heavy handed. Initially I didn’t like him, but looking at him again, I rather like him. The head shape is just about correct.

I haven’t drawn much since I started feeling kind of ill. I’ll try again this week… I’m getting that itchy feeling when I get around pencils and paper. I’m going to take another stab at drawing cats again. Well… still a bit of daylight left to the day. I’m heading back out to enjoy it.

Oh baby it’s cold outside. Way too cold. I think when I went out earlier the weatherman said it was about -25c. Gawd I hate the winter. I know, I know… I’m Canadian and by default I’m supposed to love playing in the snow, skiing, hockey skating… everything snow and ice related. Somewhere in my genetic makeup those specific DNA markers went rogue and never took over. I loathe the snow. Sorry, I realise that is terribly disloyal, but I can’t even get excited about the Winter Olympics. Sigh… I want to go sit at an outside cafe sipping lattes and drawing little birds. I want to go out and not have to dress up like Nanook of the North. Know how to tell how old a Canadian is? Count the salt rings on their pants. Oh god now I’m whining and it’s only January!

To make up for my whining here’s one of my latest little birds for you. I did this Tufted Titmouse during the holidays. I’m using both the classic Staedtler Mars Lumograph B 2B and 6B for the darkest parts of the birds. For the lighter softer downy feathers I’m using Cretacolor Fine Art Graphite pencils 2H HB Fine. The Cretacolor leads are terrific for creating a soft fluffy look and the leads are very durable. I tried some other brands but found the lead tips kept snapping off. Staedtler and the Cretacolor hold a sharp point beautifully. I haven’t settled on either brand yet, but I’m enjoying a great deal of success in using them. The mechanical pencils were great but using a variety of pencils allows for more detailed and softer sketches. Well enjoy the bird, I’m off to the cafe for a latte and to draw a bit and dream of spring. Oh… spring… outdoor cafes, sunshine and warmth … sigh….
