An unusual fix for 0×800ccc0f email error

A few weeks back I struggled with an 0×800ccc0f error. Customer could receive emails but not send any. Quite frustrating.
All the usual fixes weren’t working.
The actual email error reads:
“Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Error Number: 0×800CCC0F”
In plain English - your computer cannot connect to the email server so you cannot send mail.
The usual fixes are:
1. Redo your user profile in outlook or outlook express - this includes all your email settings. This means, you have to dig up your password, email login info and pop settings.
2. Temporarily disable your antivirus and see if you can send mail. If you can then the problem is with your antivirus. Change to a different program.
3. Firewall is interferring with your email program. This often crops up after an update has been done on the firewall software. Check your firewall, disable it temporarily and see if you can send. If you can, then the problem is with your Firewall. Time to really think hard about the program. You need to tell it to allow outlook to send mail.
*** If you are a sympatico.ca customer and using Norton Anti-Virus then the problem likely lies with Norton - change to a different antivirus and the problem will likely disappear. I’ve switched most of my customers over to either Avast! or AVG - fewer conflicts and problems.
Usually the problem is caused by the computer’s firewall . But in this case, the problem wasn’t with the antivirus, the firewall, nothing I could figure out. I banged my head against the keyboard for a long time trying to figure this out.
I went through every program in her computer trying to figure it out and then had an epiphany! She had an old copy of Microsoft’s Window’s Defender installed. This copy was an outdated version of the software and for reasons I can’t answer had started to block all outgoing mail. Once I removed it, all mail started to go out normally.
So there you have it. A common error, with a slightly uncommon fix.
Before going through all the pains of removing major software packages such as firewalls and antiviruses, do a quick check to see if Windows Defender is installed. Disable or remove it and reboot the computer and see if the problem vanishes. If the problem persists, then try the more invasive techniques.
